| So how did the sound and feel of The Unforgiving all come together?
Well with the previous album The Heart of Everything, seeing that we had finalized our sound of many years, we used that as the starting point for writing the new album. It was time to do something in a new direction more, still be who we are but also reinvent ourselves. We just felt like, “Let’s push through all the musical boundaries that we have put up for ourselves and just let them go and see what happens.” We felt like there were some 80’s influences coming through in our music, the musical change there is that mainly there are 80’s influences now and before we would have kicked out anything 80’s because it is that is not something you would normally combine with our music. In a way it just happened to us and it feels really right at the moment.
How did the comic book become involved with this album?
I’ve always wanted to write a book, but I am not a professional writer (Laughs), but I tell stories so we tried to combine a different way to do it based on this comic. We based our lyrics on this comic. We got a professional writer Steven O’Connell and we came up with the story together with him and it was so refreshing and so energizing that we came into a really good flow and things just evolved.
How did the short films all come together?
The way the films were done was a combination of the base storyline that Steven and we made up but also the director of the production company. I think they came up with the idea to introduce and to explain a little more about the main characters because they don’t get explained in the comic so much or at least their backgrounds so it got explained in the movies. I think it was the right people working in the same kind of creative flow and I think it worked well.
Did you change up the production process at all for The Unforgiving?
We always work ourselves on this as well but it’s the same thing we have been working with on the last two albums. Everybody works on new sounds again, and if you go, “I want to change this and that for the new album” and everyone understands immediately where you are going to because they have the same musical progression. So then we change it because everyone feels where we need to go with the sound and building what feels natural.
How about the writing for The Unforgiving?
It’s just that the songs all came very easy this time. I think maybe that when songs come easier and more natural then it doesn’t feel artificial. I think the best songs are always written in a few minutes. With most of these songs there was a change actually because 90% of them we did so quickly, of course we had a lot of songs that we threw away, but we worked at a very quick tempo because of the natural flow of what was happening with the songs.
Do you have a favorite song on the new album yet?
Oh yes, I have several. (Laughs) That’s the problem I like so many but it depends on the mood of course. I like “Faster”, and “Sinead” a lot it’s one of my favorites, “In the Middle of the Night”. Those three songs are the most spectacular ones on the album. With those three it’s refreshing again. All three of them are very different
What extras will be included with the album?
We have two editions of the album which have the songs on them of course and then there’s the special edition which has all three of the short movies. All of the singles have a video
Now what about the upcoming American tours?
We have toured America before with the previous albums and we had a very cool time especially with all those great people after the shows. Some people showed us a little bit of their town or city and that was really very cool way of meeting a lot of new people. It’s a great time so I am looking forward to doing this tour again. So hopefully we meet the people we met before and maybe we meet some other cool people as well and maybe we get see to see a little bit more of America. We are looking forward to it. | |
